Have you ever drank raw or unpasteurized milk? Chances are if you have you have noticed the taste difference. Well, that is not the only difference from pasteurized milk. Raw milk contains helpful nutrients that pasteurization destroys. Pasteurization is a heating process in which most bacteria are destroyed, even helpful ones. Some of the nutrients that pasteurization destroys are calcium, iodine, and vitamin C. It also stops souring. People may think why is stopping souring bad? Sour milk is given to invalids because it is easy to digest, has laxative properties, and is not unpleasant to take. Pasteurization is popular because supposedly it kills the germs in raw milk that cause tuberculosis. But, a study showed that over five years in a group of 70 children who drank raw milk there was one case of tuberculosis. There were 14 cases in children that drank pasteurized milk. Also if pasteurization would become compulsory, many small farms would close, leaving all the production to a few large companies. In conclusion, pasteurization causes more harm than good.

I dont drink milk so i cant relate to this but wouldnt raw milk mean “old” milk? Does pasteurization accur on the farm where the cows are milked? Milk can cause tuberculosis? Thats scary. It would be bad if the small farms close because they could be the local milk and food source for a neighboring town.

This article is very interesting to me because, my dad talks about when he was a boy and he would drink the milk fresh after he milked the cow. I think that unpasteurized milk should be more available but I don’t think that all milk should be unpasteurized. I was just wondering if milk was still dangerous if you get a tuberculosis shot?

I drink so much milk that it’s not funny. I think that the tuberculosis shot should be something everyone.

sreddinger- raw milk is just unpasteurized. It would be bad for small farms now especially with the economy how it is they might have to close. Pasteurization occurs in factorys.

phsmstockdale, I would think that you can still get tuberculosis after you get the shot because you can still get the flu after you get the shot.

The tuberculosis in the pasteurized mil group could have received it from anywhere – it is an airborne virus. Generally the shot will protect. In the case of the flu vaccine, it only protects you from 3 of the strains of flu (and you are protected). Unfortunately, viruses mutate and there are well over 1000 different flu viruses as well.
Pasteurization is necessary when the milk has to travel some distance to get to where it is sold. It would be unfortunate to lose local markets as staying close to the source of a food product means there is less intervention needed before it is sold.
